El Tour de Tucson Poster & Jersey Submission

We were asked to come up with an El Tour de Tucson poster/jersey idea as they already had a few submissions and wanted another artist to submit another option. Unfortunately, less then a week was given so this was done outside of work hours to afford more time, which there still wasn’t a whole lot. It wasn’t anyones fault — sometimes the process is longer than the time given. These were two ideas, but where never completely finished due to time constraints.
Idea #1, including the Pima County Courthouse [the old one, that is] and saguaro ribs in the background. Where to put the cyclists? Not totally sure, but either riding in front [very dynamic] or around the dome.

Idea #2: a much stronger composition for the poster, with the riders leaving the old Pima County Courthouse and the 7am sunrise in the background. With the sun on the far side, deeper colors in shadow could be used with a few lighter colored highlights.

Here is a quick color mock-up of the second idea, with deep blue/purple shadows.

Another quick mockup of the poster so that we could pull the graphics over to the jersey.

… and another version in green.

The final poster would have been painted, and the 5 spot color restriction for the clothing would be removed.

A good cycling jersey always complements the poster, though the printing restrictions keep it from getting all-out crazy. This version matched the border of the Pima County Courthouse’s dome, and looks a bit more southwest.

We don’t believe we have ever seen a blue and purple jersey – it just might work.

The jerseys are printed with 5 spot colors, and the last few years the colors have been somewhat similar. This was a sizable jump from prior year’s colors.

U of A Softball Championship Regionals and Super Regionals

If you haven’t heard, the U of A softball team has a bit of a dynasty. Okay, more than a bit. Every year our exceptional coaches put together an exceptionally talented group of players and they tend to play, well, exceptional. This year has been no different, and the U of A hosted both some regional and super regional play. They are currently in the hole in Oklahoma and are up against what is considered the best team in the nation. Let us hope we beat them and continue on.

This was a rush job and we kept it clean and simple, making sure they would be easily recognizable credentials, going off the colors of the NCAA’s softball logo. It wasn’t a surprise that we continued to the super regionals, but it was a surprise that through some losses, the super regionals were hosted at the U of A. We modified them slightly so that anyone without red on their credentials would not make it in from the regionals. A slight gray gradient on the bottom made it just that much cleaner looking.

PAC-10 Gymnastic Championship Credentials

The Gymnastic Championships were held at the University of Arizona and they needed some attractive credentials. What is most difficult about designing them is making sure they both stand out and recognizable. That isn’t always easy when everyone will be wearing different colored clothing, and they stand out just fine when they are on a white piece of paper. Once they are dispersed to several hundred people, things change quickly. We went with a solid background with a bit of color at the bottom – that should have stood out rather well. Arizona did well, finishing 4th in the meet [the PAC-10 is always stacked] and they are headed off to Los Angeles for Nationals.

Olympic Time!

Free wallpaper just because I love the olympics! The olympics have always been a favorite of mine, not just for the event but the imagery and graphics of the event. My one request when friends are traveling – bring me back something olympic related. In 2008 I received a 2014 olympic t-shirt from a friend in Moscow as well as a huge book on Beijing’s graphics. So much fun, but unfortunately they only last for 2 weeks.

If I had been smart, I would have made a decent logo such as the ones below and sold them as t-shirts online. Chances are I could have made a killing. Just say it out loud in you best Bob & Doug McKenzie voice, or the moose from Brother Bear – you know it, the Quebecois accent, eh? I know, stereotypical and all that, but it would have been fun to do.

UofA Baseball and Softball Credentials

We continued with the look we created for the University of Arizona Athletic Department for the media and staff credentials for both baseball and softball. Each was individually numbered and an additional credential was made for the televised game as well [Arizona is good – we expect the addition of more televised games soon]. We would recommend catching one of the ballgames in our «rough» Tucson weather.
